This one had me scratching my head. I’ve been looking at gay porn sites for years now, reviewing them and writing up my thoughts about them. I reckon I have reviewed around 5,000 sites in the last six years, give or take the occasional, accidental, straight one, and not including the TS/TV ones. So, you’d think I should know what the latest trends in gay porn are wouldn’t you? Well, I had to stop and think, and look back at notes, and stand back a bit to see the wood for the trees, as it were.

The thing that strikes me most is the improvement in technology. The trend these days that’s first in my mind is the trend for mobile porn. Now you will find the good, solid sites come not only with mobile phone versions of their movies, but with whole sites compatible for viewing on a hand-held something. I have to admit that last night was the first time I touched and iPad. (Honestly! But I really want one now.) So now when I see ‘suitable for iPads’ I will know what the site means. But I also see, in members’ areas, things like: iPhone, iPod, 3GP and other strange letters and off spellings, and now it’s starting to make sense. These days the front runner for gay porn trends has to be formatting of videos for all kinds of iThings.

There are also improvements in technology, with bigger, better and higher resolution files for movies, and there have been improvements in bandwidths and access to internet connections to support such large files. This only worries me when I think of some folk who are still on dial-up and slow connections. I recently saw a standard 20 minute length porn movie for download that was so big in quality/resolution terms that it was over 3GB. On my mid-range connection that would take a few hours to come down. Let’s hope it’s a belter of a show.

But as for the actual porn itself, what’s trendy now? Well, we seem to be seeing an increase in reality sites again. These stared out a few years back and then seemed to level off, but recently I’ve found more and more what I call ‘tube style’ sites coming online. Loads of little sites where “we’ve hacked Facebook and found your hidden photos” kind of stuff. Rubbish mainly, I have to say. I’ve seen so many where the tour is better than the often expensive members’ area; once inside you have a couple of nicked videos from XTube or somewhere and lots of non-exclusive stuff you’ve seen before. So, avoid them and look for things with real companies behind them, like Bait Bus from Bang Bros, for example.

Straights go gay for pay had its heyday a while back too, but it is still going strong and on the increase once more. Way back when, when Broke Straight Boys hit the streets running it was something new and a great invention. And then everyone jumped on the bandwagon and every other site was about ‘straight’ guys doing gay sex. Sadly this meant that many sites got it wrong, and you got nameless, silent men jerking off beneath the screaming headline: “this is a straight guy doing gay stuff, wow!” Well, actually no; this was a man having a wank and no one knew (or cared) if he was straight or gay, and what’s gay about jerking off anyway? So, the point here is that straight going gay is still around and on the increase again, but once more we have to watch out for the imposters.

I checked up on who is accessing the most gay porn, and found a ‘trends’ survey carried out by the largest search engine company you can think of. Apparently, according to web statistics, the Czech Republic accesses the most gay porn sites and the number has been on the increase since 2004 (up to 2009). Not surprising then that where once czechboys.com was the only decent Czech site and Eastboys.com the only Eastern Europe one, that now we have hundreds, and even William Higgins in now based in East Europe rather than the Wild West.

So, I’d say the biggest trend in gay porn these days is the increase in technology and visual, recording standards. That and the continuing trend for reality porn, straights going gay and smooth and sexy posers from Prague that you can now hold in the palm of your hand and jerk off to when on the bus. (If you do, get someone to record it and you too could make a fortune in gay, reality porn.)

What makes a ‘porn star’? What is it that gives some models and actors this title when others don’t seem to achieve it? And who are the top gay porn stars working in the Czech gay porn industry? I did some searching around and investigating to see if I could find out who was hot and who is not, at the moment at least.

For me it was Johan Paulik who first attracted my attention to the Czech gay porn world. This was several years ago now and last I head Johan was no longer appearing in movies, and hasn’t done for a while, but he is now getting behind the camera, and being in the production office. Johan appeared in movies from 1994 (Lukas’ story) to 2007 (Too many boys) and has made well over 20 movies. He was ‘the face of Bel Ami’ for a long while and though I associate him with the Czech Republic, he was actually born in Slovakia.

Prague born Pavel Novotný on the other hand, is Czech through and through. This smooth skinned hunk has appeared in gay, straight and bisexual porn flicks, and has won awards, including the 2002 Adult Erotic Gay Video Awards (the ‘Grabbys’ as they are also known).

Checking around the net I found references to many other Czech gay porn stars, but mainly that’s because the word ‘star’ is overused. Everyone appearing in a movie is a ‘star’ it seems. Not so. I’ve seen a few East European sites recently which feature boys from the Czech Republic and there is a clear difference between those who know what they are doing (as named above for example) and amateurs hired in to make a quick porn flick. A star needs to have presence on the screen, a good body perhaps, but not necessarily, and he needs to be good at his job. Some of these amateur sites – which are run by professionals but feature amateur performers – have a habit of calling their boys ‘stars’ when all they do is kiss, strip and get off together in front of a camera. That’s not star quality, no matter how cute you may be; just by being sexy on the eye doesn’t make you a star.

So who is hot at the moment? You know, I found it really hard to track down any commentaries on that subject: who is the top Czech porn star? No one seemed to know. While searching around I constantly see the names Bel Ami and Johan Paulik popping up, as if Czech porn is rooted back in the 1990’s and hasn’t moved on. I know that’s not true so I went to the experts at Czechboys.com.

Not only does this site know its models but so do its members. So the top rated models here are going to be the top porn stars? Well, maybe not exactly as the site tends to focus on twinks and younger guys, and older actors can be stars too! But 19 year old Misa, a student, and Tomase, another student, were the members’ top two models on the site, and the site has lots of active members. Interestingly both boys were blonde and both straight (until they cum). And, I do have to say, both excellent in front of the camera. But as these two, and hundreds like them, are exclusive to the site (or were when their content there was made) you may not be able to find them elsewhere.
